1988 Toyota MR2, 5-Speed, A/C, Power Locks & Windows (Non-Supercharged)
About 4 months ago I bought the MR2 frommy 92 year old step-dad, a mechanic and owner/operator of an auto repair service who bought the MR2 from the original owner about 12 years ago. I needed a car to drive while my main car was in the shop for some major engine repairs. I kept the car about 3 months longer than I had intended because it has been such a fun car to drive and I wanted to make some upgrades for the next owner after me.
After I bought the MR2 I replaced the A/C compressor, A/C belt, Coolant, Brake Pads, Battery and Wiper Blades. That’s all it needed mechanically. Then I installed five aftermarket stainless steel rims, and five new high performance tires (I replaced the “donut spare” with a full size tire and new rim). I had the MR2 repainted and the painter installed an MR2 decal kit, and put on “supercharged” decals in the kit by mistake. Of course, you can always locate an MR2 supercharger in a salvage yard or on eBay and have it installed to make the decals correct (they do look cool). The car comes with its original MR2 User Manual, original Jack, Tools, and T-Top Storage Bags in the front storage compartment.
All mechanical parts & electronics work except for the electric radio antenna (the car includes a new, MR2 compatible electric radio antenna, to be installed by buyer). The factory seats, carpets and upholstery are in good shape with little wear. The dash has several age cracks, so I installed a custom fitted dash cover. NOTE: the dash can be inexpensively covered with vinyl leather by an auto upholsterer (see YouTube videos on “How to recover a dashboard vinyl leather yourself”). The heater runs hot, A/C runs cold. No dents, no rust. Neither my Dad nor I have removed the T-tops, and they do not leak. Both T-top headliner panels are missing (replacements can be found in a salvage yard or on eBay).
The five-speed transmission, non-supercharged MR2 is a blast to drive, and gets over 30 mpg. It hugs the road and has amazing acceleration. In 1988, the “supercharged” version was written up as able to do a quarter mile in 6.8 seconds. This is a FUN car to drive and a great investment!
Here is what an owner of a 1986 (non-supercharged) MR2 had to say in a recent eBay advert:
“The car is a street legal go-cart. It feels like a skateboard with an engine bolted to it. The exhaust sounds like a hive full of angry bees with chainsaws. The MR2 gives you the opportunity to experience mid-engine driving for tens of thousands less that something Italian. This isn’t a first car for your kid. It’s your first classic car. This is a driver’s car, no power steering, no ABS brakes, or any other nannies…. Its unique styling, bulletproof reliability, rarity, and excellent gas mileage make it the perfect entry level classic car.”
The car is for sale locally in La Verne, California and I reserve the right to end the auction early. The mileage shown above may increase because I cannot resist driving it. Has a clean California title.
