Description

Thank you, ake-non-paying "buyer"! Due to someone ruining the auction for the rest of us, 'm relisting with a lower price and no reserve!
We have here an original paint 1983 Toyota pickup with the SR5 package in short-wheel-base form. I've seen a lot of these old first gen trucks on eBay and some of them are not real SR5 trucks. They do look nice painted up and with the stripe kit applied, ut they're usually deluxe or base models. This one is the real deal having come from the factory with AC, -speed, ucket seats and console, ood grain dash and gauge package. I bought this great little truck a couple years ago from the original owner (I am the true second owner) who purchased it new at Atlanta Toyota. It's still sporting 99% of it's original paint from the factory - the 1% would be an old touch up job and some surface rust that's been killed. It runs and drives good and has a a lot of new parts to make it nice and trouble-free for it's third owner. I've gone on long hauls and many short stints with this truck and it's a blast. Gets a lot of thumbs up, ooks and folks telling me they used to have/know a friend/want one of these trucks back in the day. The obvious appeal of the first gen 4WD Toyota pickup is it's solid front axle and it's classic design. Arguably, his is the best truck/HiLux design Toyota has put out. The solid axle makes it a kidney-shaking fun ride and a beast on trials. The original owner used this as his daily for a number of years and then retired it to his hunting lodge where is was seldom used but garaged. The 4WD works like a charm but I haven't had a chance to take it to the mountains as intended. Sadly, t's lived it's life with me in my garage and it's be relegated to Home Depot runs. The only reason I'm selling this is I am importing a Land Cruiser and I don't have the garage space.
PROS:
• Engine was replaced shortly after I purchased the truck with a dual-timing chain 22R out of a Celica (150k). At the time, he odometer matched the miles on the engine minus a few hundred miles. The good folks at ACC Toyota here in Atlanta did the engine swap for me and they did some the following (have receipts):
• New Clutch
• New Exhaust from manifold, uffler to tailpipe. Cat. and EGR delete.
• New filters, luids, ires and plugs.
• New front wheel bearings.
• New front disc brakes (rear were adjusted are fine)
• General Grabber tires are good at around 80% (Sorry, ut the wheels and tires pictured are not included - please last image for wheel/tire combo)
• Engine isn't spewing oil, sing coolant or making nutty noises.
• All gauges work.
• Runs and drives great. I rebuilt the Aisin carb with a NAPA kit and it works really well. Only issue is the choke will need to be tweeked. If you crank it after it's been sitting for a couple weeks, ou need to pump the gas. After that initial start, t runs like a champ. It tracks straight and the steering box has been properly adjusted.
• Original cosmetic shape - interior is in good shape. However, ash has the normal splits and the front drivers seat has a tear. Vintage seat covers hide that. Stripe kit looks good and paint is pretty shiny for how old it is. It's not perfect by any means and there is some discoloration. This is due to coating the surface pitted rust areas with Pentrol and clear POR-15. Unfortunately for me, he clear POR 15 is UV sensitive and turns to a wood glue looking yellow. This doesn't bother me as I figured it's better to have the rust taken care of than a little yellowing.
• Door cards are good but drivers side pocket has been cut off (owner said it was always scraping up against his leg).
• Headliner is good as is back carpet.
• All fluids - including transmission and diffs - have been changed.
• Frame is not rusty!
• Rancho shocks and steering stabilizer.
• Bed was Line-Xed. Surprisingly, he bed was in good shape when I got it as there was no rot other than surface rust.
• Receipts included, wners manual and original tool kit!
CONS:
• It's not rust free, ut it's a close as you can get for a southern Toyota with a California made bed! You can see the detail in the images, ut the rust is really relegated to the box - Under the rails and a couple of small areas towards the bottom. I have neutralized and POR-15ed the spots and Pentroled the areas. Needless to say, it's not the prettiest, ut it's not rusting. There is dent on the front drivers fender where the original owner was teaching his daughter stick. She hit a mailbox and it pushed in the metal. It's been POR-15ed as well. Other than that, here are small dings and scratches that are to be expected.
• Front knuckles are weeping a bit. Could use rebuild sometime in the next few years.
• Original radio was replaced with a Toyota tape deck from 1985 or so. Tape deck doesn't work, ut I use an FM transmitter to play the music from a device. Radio works fine.
• AC is currently in-op. It needs more than a charge. It needs hoses and o-rings but the compressor is spinning freely. During install of the engine the AC was never hooked back up.
• Original carpet is pretty clean but has some wear. Plastic panels under the seat belts cracked so I took them off - pretty common. Lock latch for the sliding rear window is missing.
•¨Rain gutter area had some surface rust but I coated it with clear POR 15.
• For whatever reason the odometer got hung up on 176999. The mile marker works fine, ut the rest of the numbers are hung up. This happens a couple of months ago and I may have put 100 miles on it since then. I have not took the pod apart to find out the issue.
I wanted a first gen truck that was not too nice that I couldn't use it and take it on a forest service road once in a while. As it often happens, ended up not using this truck as much as I thought. I love it and would keep it, ut the 70 series takes the space in the garage. It will be a great rig for someone wanting to restore or just preserve it the way it is. Really, here's not much to do with it unless you want to get picky and get a new fender for it. It starts right up every time and gets you there. If anyone is looking for a good short-wheel-base first gen, wouldn't hesitate to vouch for this one as a Toyota nut.
