Description

This is No Reserve Auction of a very nice original re-commissioned Triumph GT6 in ‘driver’ condition. It is a MK2 or GT6+ the last of the ‘round-tails’ it has the fully independent ‘rotoflex’ suspension which fixed handling problems of the earlier model and has the most powerful stock engine. Somebody is going to buy a very nice preserved car!

I purchased the car from the 2nd owner who had put it in dry storage (his parents garage) when he joined the Navy in 1983. It hadn’t moved in over 30 years. It was all original and completely complete with no botched repairs so typical of old sports cars. The odometer reads 76055 miles which judging by overall condition I believe to be correct.

Body Condition. The car is very straight and shows no evidence of any collision damage. Doors hood and hatch all operate easily and gaps appear factory correct. That said the driver’s door does appear to have been re-painted on the outside and the color is close but isn’t perfect and the pinstripe width on the door doesn’t match the rest of the car. The rest of the Saffron paint is factory original. I have not color sanded or buffed or waxed the paint. There are some stone chips in the leading edge of the hood and other minor flaws that may detail out nicely. Not bad for 45 years old.

All glass is original un-cracked and clear. I don’t know if the rear window defroster is functional.

There is some damage to the rear hatch area where it appears something fell on it and a slight bend to the metal surrounding the right rear turn-signal.

There a small dent in the hood where it looks like the hood was shut impacting something (battery cable?) inside the engine compartment.

There is some rust just becoming visible on the rocker-panels. The metal is strong enough that finger pressure doesn’t dent or go through! Floors doors hood spare tire well and hatch (all the usual rust areas) are rust-free with original paint still protecting.

The underside has a dent under the passenger seat where it looks to have run over something. There is lite surface rust over the entire underside where-ever the usual oil leaks didn’t provide protection. Though not evident in pictures the underside still wears its factory primer and paint over-spray behind some surface rust.

All chrome trim is present dent and rust free. There is some minor pitting on the cast chrome parts.

Re-commissioning included:

Brake System - New brake shoes pads calipers cylinders and flexible lines. I converted to DOT5 (silicone) fluids when filling and bleeding the new system.

Clutch System - New clutch plate slave and master cylinders also converted to DOT5 fluids.

Fuel System - Cleaned the fuel tank and hard-lines replaced the fuel-gage sender and had the (original) pump and carburetors professionally rebuilt. Installed new throttle shaft bushings.

Cooling System – Had the radiator and heater professionally cleaned and pressure tested replaced the engine block cooling plugs head gasket all cooling hoses and water-pump. The heater control cable slipped from the interior control handle. I now (rarely) set the heater temperature from under the hood.

Engine – I replaced the head gasket as part of the cooling system refresh. The valves were re-adjusted at that time. Compression was 175PSI on cylinders 1-5 and 185 on #6. It starts easily and runs great but has just started making what sounds like a rod bearing knock. I would not plan to drive the car further than onto your transport trailer until lower engine repairs are completed. That said there is no excess for/aft crankshaft play so the thrust washers are not worn out

Transmission – This is a non-overdrive car. On oil change I found some loose needle bearings in the original transmission. I replaced the transmission with a used 4 speed from a 1970 GT6. The shifter was rebuilt. This transmission is fully functional no unusual noises all syncro’s work. The shifter bushing is a little stiff so you have to push down/lift up when going into/out-of reverse.

Rear end – The differential ‘weeps’ a little oil so I park the car over a rag. The ‘rotoflex’ bushings are the ones on the car when I got it. Everything functions though there is some ‘clunking’ occasionally when going over rough roads. I suggest rear suspension rebuild at some point . I have a set of new rotoflex bushings (banded & un-installed) included in the sale.

Ignition System – Sparkplugs wires Lucas Sport Coil and a Pertronix replacement for the original points/condenser are all new.

Electrical System – I replaced the original fuse block due to damage to a fuse. The entire electrical harness is uncut original in great condition. All electrics work though the drivers side brake light bulb burns out frequently. The battery is 2 years old.

Front suspension – Rebuilt with new bushings ty-rod ends and steering rack bushings. The car has the Koni shocks were on it when I purchased it.

Exhaust System – The exhaust was freshened with new gaskets and hangers. The new muffler is for a later MK3. My intension was to replace the tips to return it to stock GT6-Plus appearance. I will include the remains of the rusted original muffler as a guide.

I removed and welded in a replacement battery box and repainted the top of the engine bulkhead (where brake and clutch fluid had damaged the surfaces over the years) at the time of battery box replacement. The paint is color matched to the original and the remainder is included for touchups.

Wheels and Tires – The wheels are 5 x 13 reproduction mini-lites with (now 2 year old) 175/70 tires. I have the caps but prefer the look without them. Included in the sale are (4)MK3 GT6 wheels and cap and the (6) original Rostyle hubcaps in very nice shape.

Though not original to this car there is a working period British-Leyland AM/FM radio installed. The working original AM radio is included in the sale and a spare original speaker with housing.

The re-commissioning project is documented on ‘The Triumph Experience’ forum here:

As is the car is now reliable around town gets a lot of attention and I’m not ashamed to be seen in it. I think it still needs:

*The engine will occasionally stumble when warm some additional tuning is needed.

*Most of the window seals are dry and could be replaced. (included in the sale)

*The interior could use some freshening:

the drivers seat has a tear in the lower bolster (there is an extra set of 1970 seats with good upholstery included).

mice ate a hole in the headliner.

the door cards are worn.

the carpets need replacement (a new sewed carpet kit is included).

The wood dash clearcoat is cracking but has never been ‘overcoated’.

The dash-cover interior hatch-light and steering wheel are uncracked/good.

The trip odometer doesn’t work.

Also included in the sale:

Factory repair manual (2) other repair manuals and a laminated electrical schematic. And some spare parts including:

Original (rusted) muffler

(2) RotoFlex Donuts: (New/banded)

(4) MK3 GT6 wheels & caps (great condition)

(6) Original Rostyle hubcaps in nice shape.

New Window gaskets (windshield & hatch) & chrome trims

A box of misc. new bits & pieces.

Big stack of receipts for items I purchased.

Touch-up paint.

‘Sewn’ Carpet kit.

I really hate to sell this car but we are moving soonand I will have no space for this car.
