The Volkswagen Type 181 was a four-door,two-wheel drive, ff-road convertible manufactured by Volkswagen from 1968 to 1983. The Type 181 was originally developed for the West German Army, ut was also sold to the public. The Thing had many names: the Kurierwagen in West Germany, he Trekker (RHD Type 182) in the United Kingdom, he Thing in the United States (1973–74), he Safari in Mexico and South America, nd Pescaccia in Italy.The Type 181 shared some of its mechanical parts with Volkswagen’s Type 1 (Beetle) and the pre-1968 Volkswagen Microbus, nd shared the floorplan withthe Type1 Karmann-Ghia.
