This is the real thing... a German built authentic Westfalia gem that spent most of her life in California before being brought east for a major rejuvenation. Restored in 2014 and taken on her “maiden” trip from Ohio to Key West and up the east coast in 2015. This stunner is one of the best examples of the iconic Camper in the country.

We purchased this beautiful bus last fall and planned our own endless summer. However, family issues have interrupted our plans and we must reluctantly resell her.

The restoration included:

  • a BRAND NEW factory built (not rebuilt) 1641 cc engine. (only 3200 miles have been driven since the installation).

  • A completely rebuilt transmission and new clutch. All new fuel lines.

  • Fresh paint in the original Savannah Beige (with windows out). The bus was taken down to bare metal and refinished. There is NO FILLER... 2 minimal rust spots were cut out and replacement metal welded in. The body is laser-straight. There is NO RUST on this bus... although the solid undercarriage does exhibit the oxidation you would expect. The small amount of interior metal did not justify repainting.

  • New pop-top canvas and rubber seals.

  • All new birch interior panels including headliners.

  • New glass (including windshield) and window rubber. The 2 side jalousie (louvered) windows are original and show the minor pitting common to aluminum windows.

  • While the front seats have been reupholstered, the interior vinyl is original and in great condition with no tears and very minimal marking.

  • Almost all chrome has been replaced and the front rubber mat is new.

  • New Hankook Optimo tires including spare (now with 3200 miles on them).

  • Updates: there is a “RestoMod” area upfront. The radio has been replaced by a Pioneer am/fm/cd player with iPod, MP3 input and a USB port. There are 2 in-door and 2 overhead speakers. Along side is a 3 port Charging Station for all portable devices. The ashtray (which we have) has been replaced with a double drink holder. The cabin carpeting is new and not factory... but easily removed to shake out sand.

  • New headlights, reflectors, front side steps and bumper pads.

The bus runs like new. It drives straight as an arrow with absolutely no issues. Tach readings on level road read: 3000 at 55mph, 3250 at 60mph and 3500 at 65mph. It cruises well at 60 but will reach 80mph (level). The manual transmision shifts easily, the brakes are excellent and it starts first time, every time.

There are no drips, leaks, rattles or squeaks.

Except as noted, this bus is original and only OEM parts were used in the restoration.

  • Also included: The original canopy and the 2 original child (top and front) cots (hammocks). These have not been restored and show their age, but can be made to look like new with minimal effort.

Disclosure: two small issues keep her from being a perfect 10 for a 1970 Westy. First there is a small ding (see photo with ruler) behind the sliding door (easily fixed) and a minor crack in the dash cover which has been repaired but is still perceptible if you are looking for it. A new dash pad would correct it. The odometer shows 65K miles however, as noted, only 3200 miles have been driven since the new engine was installed

This Westfalia ranks as a #2 according to the Hagerty Classic Car valuation guide. While it would win a local car show in it's classification, it is not at concors level. Average Westfalias are valued at $23K+ and this bus is way above average. Major auctions have seen “perfect” examples sell for $40K+.

We will assist with shipping worldwide... but if you are the winning bidder and would like to fly in and vacation home, we will be happy to meet you at the airport and deliver it right there. We would prefer either of the 2 Columbus, Ohio airports but any within 120 miles of Waterford, Ohio (45786) would be fine (Pittsburgh, PA or Charleston, WV for example).

I will respond to any questions ASAP and will email any additional photos or videos that may help you make a decision.

Note: Decals and magnets recalling the Key West trip are still on the bus but can be removed prior to pickup... but they are cool.
