Thanks for taking the time to check out my listing. Up for grabs is one of my favorite little cars, the MK1 VW Cabriolet named Riley. I'm a former VW specialist who has owned many MK1-4 vehicles in my life. This one I've owned since 2006, and it's in desperate need of a new owner that can bring him back to where he needs to be. This is an intact, virgin MK1 that has not been beaten. I know I should keep the car and do what needs to be done, but I am out of space and out of time and have too many projects going on. It's time to pass him on to someone who will love him more. This car was owned by a local school teacher who relocated out of the country in 2005 and I bought the car not running. I repaired the fuel pump relay and used the car for several years until it went into storage sometime around 2008. I then pulled it out of storage in 2015 to get it running and replace the clutch that had failed in 2008.
What's been done:
2006-2008: Front struts, mounts, rear shocks (Boge Turbo Gas), front axles, timing belt, accessory belts, fuel pump relay, fuel injector o rings and vacuum hoses, shift linkage rebuilt, new motor mounts (real German ones including he difficult side mount)
2015: (All within the last 100 miles) Battery, ignition distributor, ignition wires, plugs, fuel filter, fuel tank drained, fuel injection cleaned, clutch
two front tires, oil change, gear box oil changed, radiator. .
What is needs: The water pump and heater core both started leaking almost immediately. The top needs to be replaced. The fuel gauge sending unit is bad. I had replaced the fan switch, but the new one is bad, the fan stays on all the time. (The original didn't work at all) The AC compressor front seal blew out. One of the vacuum motors for the HVAC system leaks, so the modes don't change like they should. There is no structural rust. It could probably use some new injectors, and I'm certain the warm up regulator is bad. The car starts and runs fine, but needs to be warmed up for a moment before you can drive off. Once warmed up it runs super strong. The floor pan and strut towers are solid. The car has been either in a garage or under a cover the whole time it has been in storage. These is rust around the lower part of the windshield, one small spot on the l/s rocker, and some surface rust on the r/s quarter. I do not have the trim that is missing. Car comes with new heater core and radiator thermo switch.
I really want someone who is looking for a great project foundation to take this car and love it.
1987 MK1 VW Cabriolet 5-speed, runs well, great project car!
