Description

The Nicest VW Thing on EarthMuseum Quality----- 20K RESERVE -----Bidders with no or bad feedback will be blocked from bidding. I just got burned by a bidder with 0 feedback. Please note this car is also for sale privately and may be withdrawn from auction at any time - even after we get ebay bids. I have asked my private buyers to bid on eBay so everyone can have a level playing field. I have been asked "Why would you sell this?"The answer is simple - It is my wife's and kids summer car and it is more "Jeep / Truck" than car. And it is a collector car so she wont drive it in the rain. So the Thing is a garage queen. My wife has had fun with her Thing but wants to move to a brand new beetle convertible; soft clutch. nbsp;electric top. air conditioning. 4 wheel disk brakes. airbags. electric windows. I found this car last year after searching for many years for a Thing. They are not making any more of these - not like this one. If you win you will be responsible for getting the car. You can come get it. You can send someone to get it. You can hire a car moving company. BUT THE DEAL IS YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THE CAR. But you can turn the key and drive it anywhere - it is in ready to ride condition. It starts right up and runs like a pussy cat after it warms up. The car is in Portland Maine. As far as payment. you can pay the entire thing with PayPal or give us a PayPal deposit. Balance will be due by cashiers check. We don't charge you tax or any other stuff. You pay and you get the car. a tank of gas. and all the paperwork we have - and we have good paperwork. The car is current insured and legally registered in Maine. --- The story of the car --- This car has been finished in Avocado Satin over Black with removable Serape seat covers. The multi-color Serape seat covers do show some fraying on some of the edges. However. these are just covering the black vinyl underneath. Please look at the pictures very carefully. You will see what is essentially a new car. This is what you would get if you could buy a "sports edition" Thing NEW from VW today. This Thing was built to be the finest and most unique Thing in existence. The brainchild of Frank Saucedo. Head of General Motors design. it was conceived as a project for himself and his son. After Frank and his son decided to move on to another project it was purchased by Richard Griot. owner of Griot's Garage. Photos of this Thing can be found in Griot's publications and promotional material. The restoration started with a solid rust free Arizona car and was finished to the highest level with stunning attention to detail. 90% of all parts used in the build were new old stock and all hardware was refurbished original or replaced with stainless steel. The color match original Avocado with specially formulated Satin Finish was developed by PPG. The car has heavy black textured undercoating. The attention to detail is second to none. This was a cost is no object restoration. Her entire suspension has been revised as well featuring front adjustable torsion tubes with urethane bushings. Fox reservoir shocks and a sway-a-way sway bar. The rear suspension features urethane bushings as well along with 930 cv's. longer adjustable spring plates and sway-a-way torsion bars to match. Her stock seats were re-stuffed and re-wrapped in black vinyl and are currently sporting custom made Mexican blanket (Serape) seat covers. She has a brand new Bikini top from Thing shop and a custom roll cage built by Powler Sand rails. Her stereo is a testament to the attention to detail in the build. the rear speakers were originally 1940s ammo cases which were machined and lined with acoustic material. A high wattage amp accompanies the 4 speaker system which has hookup for MP3 or I-Pod. Her stock center gauge was restored by North Hollywood Speedo and the cluster includes VDO oil temp. mini tach. and oil pressure. This Thing is most certainly the finest on the market today. and quite possibly of all time. We have never heard or came across another that has had this level of creativity and build quality. Current it lives indoors in Maine and only is driven 100 + miles a year. It has never been out in the rain since restoration. Email me with any questions I am happy to respond to all inquiries. This is a special car and deserved a special home. If you don't see it in the photos than it is not part of the sale. The car has a 'bikini' top not a full top with windows. The removable seat covers are a bit worn on the edges but they are still fun and protect the vinyl underneath. NO GAS POWERED HEATER - NORMAL VW HEAT. The roll cage was custom designed and welded to the frame in high strength locations. The roll cage is painted in black gloss. This was a "frame off restoration"Everything was painted before assembly and all new hardware was used. We painted every inch of that car like it had been dipped in a pool of paint. The underside of the car is sprayed with black rhino liner. On Apr-17-15 at 08:31:33 PDT. seller added the following information:PLEASE NOTE (I HAVE RECEIVED A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS)The multi color seat covers are removable and are covering the black vinyl. Also see answers below:Dear dc_in_new_york. Can I just remove the colored seat covers?I will find black vinyl underneath?I see an ipod classic. can I hook up my iphone? This one does not have the gas powered heater right?Does it have windows? I don't see any windows in the pictures. ANSWERS:Hi Yes the seat covers are removable and there is black vinyl underneath. However. I have never removed the covers. The rear cover is stapled over the vinyl covers as the seat and seat back are plywood. Some of the stitching has broken loose on the covers - see photos I am attaching. Right now the ipod connector is a 30 pin classic connector. You could have a car stereo guy change it. use an adapter or install a Bluetooth adapter. No gas heater - normal heat from muffler shroud - and it works! No windows just what you see in the photos. Thanks David On Apr-17-15 at 09:31:22 PDT. seller added the following information:I have received a handful of questions about delivery of the car. I will FedEx you the papers after payment is received and will meet your transport company and give them the car.
