Up For Auctions is my 1968 Volkswagen Bay Window Westfalia Poptop Bus
The first generation of Volkswagen buses were built from 1949 to 1967 and are known as split-window buses or 'splitties'. Buses built after 1967 are known as the 'bay window models'. Production of Volkswagen camper variants continued to 2003 and was based on the Kombi then the Vanagon then the LT Mk 1 then the Transporter.
The Exterior is in very good condition. No visible rust and the paint reflects attractively from the radiant sun. It was painted two tone: Black and pea green. The black brings a modern look while the pee green takes you back to the 60s. Good whitewall tires all around.
When Volkswagen transitioned to the bay-window or breadloaf model with large single curved windshield and sliding side door the Westfalia camper was modified to include an angled poptop. This design provided space for a large child's cot overhead and on later models the poptop was further enlarged to fit a full bed large enough for two adults.
The Interior is clean with the original Westfalia green plain fabric. Palm Tree curtains was install for some privacy. The custom body board table folds down when not in use or when the bench seat pulls out to make the bed. There is a non-working icebox and the drain has been taken out. It was more of a worry for me so now I use it as a cabinet for storage.
As the design was so elementary VW turned out 90 different body amalgamations over the first five years. These variations included buses pick-ups fire engines ambulances beer wagons refrigerated ice-cream vans milk floats mobile butchers shops bread vans mobile grocers ordinary delivery vans and the more familiar camper (the last variation). The Poptop has no holes rips or stains because it is BRAND NEW! One person can raise and lower it with ease. It a very cool factor and is convenient as you can walk around the bus not worrying if you are going to bump your head.
The bay made the Type II a big triumph and by 1975 the Hanover factory had built four million of these vehicles. A range of larger engine sizes became available (1600cc 1700cc 1800cc and 2000cc) and the buses became far more reliable. The 1600 stock Engine turns on every time. The running lights brake and turn signal works as well. Currently the horn is missing a wire and does not work.
By the way this classic Volkswagen is an everyday driver. Spend more time driving than under the engine!!!
