1956 Beetle for Sale
Classic black 1956 Volkwagen Beetle for sale. Runs and drives quite well. It has the cool oval window in the back (1953-1957 had the oval window). These older Beetles are getting quite rare. Odometer reads about 91,700, ut I have no idea how many times it has rolled over or if this is even the original odometer. This is a true east coast survivor. It was originally sold in Massachusetts. Currently registered and insured in Connecticut. Connecticut does not issue titles for cars older than 25 years, o I do not have a current title. I do have previous title from Massachusetts. It was restored about 15 or 20 years ago, ut has undergone some more recent restoration in the last couple of years.
It has an updated 1600 dual port engine and will cruise at 65 mph all day long. It sits on a ’68 chassis, o much parts are easy to come by. If you’ve never owned a classic Beetle before, now that most parts are readily and relatively cheaply available. A lot of work has been done on this bug over the past five years or so.
The interior is in great shape. Orange/white vinyl seats and door panels. New gray mo-hair headliner. Dashboard has not been modified.
Sapphire IV radio included, hich works with the center-mounted mono speaker. I’ve also installed a stereo in the glove box and stereo speakers in the panels front of the doors, y your feet. Used Empi speaker install kit. The stereo has connections for iPod, r just a USB drive with music on it. It also has bluetooth, o it can be used for hands-free phone use or playing music through your phone or tab wirelessly. I ran an iPod connector through the hole where the old choke knob used to be, o I could plug in my iPod Nano. It sat nicely on top of the radio station select buttons.
Aftermarket fuel, ressure, nd oil temp gages are installed. These early Beetles originally did not have fuel gages. They had a lever you pulled to open a reserve tank of gas when you started to run out of gas in your main tank. This car does not have that. The oil pressure gage is currently not working. I may fix that soon, t which point I will update this ad.
The exterior paint job is okay, ut not show room quality. There are some small scratches and dings. Very little rust overall. Theres a little rust at the bottom of the fenders and some surface rust on the bottom of the car. Also some surface rust on the bumpers. I was planning on cleaning the rust off the bottom and re-coating with POR-15 paint, ut I’m not sure if I’ll have time to get to it. I can include cans of POR-15 paint with the car.
The typical rust problem areas have been fixed. Brand new heater channels were welded in last August, nd a bit of the lower quarter panels and door posts were replaced. The body was pulled off to do this. This would have easily been a $2000-$4000 dollar job at a body shop. If you’re not familiar with heater channels, hese are the two strength members that run along the sides of the car, nder the doors, rom the rear to front wheel wells. They have piping inside, ringing heat to vents in the floor and to the window defrosters. The heat works very well. The floor pans are still in great shape.
Windows are all good. New rubber seals in the rear and quarter windows. There are blinds installed in the rear window, n original aftermarket accessory. Also included is an exterior mesh sun visor accessory over the windshield. If you live in Connecticut, will include the 1956 license plates. CT law says you can display these old plates, s long as you keep current plates inside the car.
The 1600 dual port engine runs very well. It was rebuilt by Gary at the Suburban Engine Exchange in Waltham, A. He is a well-respected VW air-cooled engine rebuilder. The rebuilt engine has about 1000 miles on it. Also, rand new carburetor less than 1000 miles. Clutch and clutch plate were replaced last year along with a new rebuilt transmission. The car runs and shifts very well.
The front left and right ball joints were replaced about two years ago. The steering damper was also replaced at that time. Steering is smooth and straight. I’m not an expert and judging shocks, ut it could maybe use new shocks.
New brake lines, ew master cylinder, nd new wheel cylinders were installed this summer. There are drum brakes on all four wheels, s all beetles originally had. Shoes are good. The car stops very well.
Electrical is in good shape. All lights work. the hi-beam switch is foot-operated, ocated by the clutch pedal, hich is kind of cool. The only issue is the left turn signal light won’t blink in the front if you don’t hold the signal lever down all the way. I’m pretty sure it’s an issue with the switch in the lever. I may fix that soon. The generator was replace about 4 years ago. Battery is still good. Start motor works fine.
The trunk is in good shape. The trunk lid closes and releases.
