MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present yet another ’70s German cult classic, a 1971 BMW 2002 “Roundie” two-door sedan. This early example from dry Carlsbad, California was made sometime between April and December of 1971.

Also known as a type 114, the 2002 was the epitome of performance available at the time. The market for these cars is moving upward drastically in just the last year, this is a fleeting opportunity to obtain a relatively un-touched version before they get out of reach. This car has the 2.0 engine with the base single-carburetor mated to a four-speed synchromesh manual transmission. The car has the following new parts – clutch kit, Weber carburetor set-up, suspension and brakes.

Dressed in new Chamonix White paint, this 2002 shows very well on the inside and outside. The paint is in very good shape, with minimal blemishes upon close inspection and some of the trim shows wear. Car includes a body-colored front air dam. All glass pieces are intact and have appropriate appearance relative to the car’s age. Some of the exterior seals have been replaced and the new chrome bumpers are in good order. The car has 13-inch BMW steel wheels with factory wheel covers that show minimal wear or curb contact and the car rides on 175/70R13 radial tires. The body panels are all straight and car has a locking fuel filler cap. In 1971, the 2002 Series received a facelift. Other changes included wraparound bumpers for all models, a two-piece instrument cluster and new seats. This car’s trunk is in good shape and has a layer of undercoating sprayed on the rear wheelwells.

Inside, the upholstery is in great shape overall, as is the matching carpet. The three-spoke BMW steering wheel is in fair shape and the dashboard is in good condition, although there is a crack or two to the right of the main instrument binnacle. Car comes with a set of VDO gauges, main and ancillary ones in the center console. The horn is inoperable but the door panels are in good shape, as are the mirrors and the gear shift lever. Most of the interior trim is present and the white headliner contrasts nicely with the rest of the interior. Completing the interior is a Clarion AM/FM stereo with CD player with two 6×9 speakers in the package shelf.

The 2002 joined BMW’s model stable for 1968 and lasted through 1976. By 1971, the 2002 came in its best-loved shape, with the rounded taillamps and heavier, safety-mandated bumpers that didn’t detract from the car’s sporty good looks.

Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW’s director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, designer of the M10 engine, each had a two-liter engine installed in a 1600-2 for their respective personal uses. When they realized they had both made the same modification to their own cars, they prepared a joint proposal to BMW’s board to manufacture a two-liter version of the 1600-2. At the same time, American importer Max Hoffman asked BMW for a sporting version of the 02 series that could be sold in the United States. The 2.0 engine was sold in two states of tune: the base single-carburetor 2002 producing 101 hp and the dual-carburetor high compression 2002 ti producing 119 hp. The 2002 tii used the fuel-injected (130 hp) engine from the 2000 tii, which resulted in a top speed of 115 mph.

This year, BMW celebrates its 100th anniversary. BMW has a long successful history both in Europe and the United States. This is an opportunity for you to acquire a part of that history that made BMW a household name in America! “One of the most unique and sought after 2002s in the country,” a 1971 “round tail light” 2002, either to enjoy as a daily, a weekend toy or a valued addition to your collection…GET OUT AND DRIVE!

This dry 2002 from 1971 is certain to excite BMW fans and real driving enthusiasts with its iconic appearance and Teutonic attitude.

This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 90,702 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear California title.
