BODYWORK/TRIM
Assembled at GM's storied St. Louis manufacturing facility, this incredible Vette was produced on March 24th, 1971, Bloomington Gold certified on June 25th, 2000 and claimed NCRS Top Flight honors on November 4th, 2000. Of course, 30-year-old steel and resin doesn't live that kind of award-winning life unless it's benefitted from extensive restoration. And since this coupe spent quite a while with Corvette connoisseurs Ken and Gary Nabers of Houston, Texas, it's safe to assume the car has been carefully and correctly rebuilt. Naturally, that body-off reboot was topped with a glossy coat of correct Brands Hatch Green 2-stage. And today, this solid Chevy is a top-notch classic that provides a delightful combination of style, exclusivity and provenance.
With such a cleanly styled body, ornamentation could have easily ruined the C3's presence. Thankfully, Chevrolet did a great job of placing form over function and keeping brightwork to a minimum. At the front of the car, chrome-trimmed grilles center small parking lamps between a thin bumper and subtle chin spoiler. Above that bumper, a cross-flag-branded header draws the eye to a chrome-trimmed hood that seats bold "454" emblems at the foot of a vacuum operated cowl. That hood reflects factory-tint glass that's framed in bright stainless trim and capped by body-matched T-tops. At the sides of that glass, flush door poppers and flowing "Stingray" emblems perfectly complement a correct mirror, classy fender gills and stylish rocker trim. And at the back of the car, a "CORVETTE" branded valance hangs signature tail lamps and two chrome bumpers between a factory antenna, a requisite cross-flag fuel filler and spotless stainless exhaust tips
ENGINE
In 1971, if you wanted a top-of-the-line Corvette, you had one option: a 425 horsepower version of Chevrolet's coveted LS6 454. Fully sorted and ready to roll, this Stingray's original LS6 hangs a familiar 3963512 casting number behind a correct "CPX" assembly stamp and matching partial VIN. At the top of the mill, a chrome, correctly decaled air cleaner forces wind in to an 850cfm Holley 4-barrel that's cinched to stainless fuel lines and a correct aluminum intake. At the sides of that carb, stamped and painted valve covers cap correct Winters heads and fully restored exhaust manifolds. At the back of those heads, chrome-cased ignition sequences spark through silver-sleeved Packard cables. Opposite that ignition, traditional V-belts spin a correct alternator, complete with a correct deep-groove pulley, opposite a correct A.I.R. smog pump. In front of those ancillaries, a shrouded radiator circulates water through pliable hoses and reproduction tower clamps. Naturally, the Chevy Orange big block plays well against the car's Satin Black engine bay. And details like correct decals, a fresh master cylinder and a familiar Harrison expansion tank mix good form with great function.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Peer under this low-slung Chevy and you'll find a factory chassis that's straight, solid and ready to show. The car's hot big block twists torque through a tough Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which hangs a correct 1971 (71) high performance (CY) assembly tag in front of a correct, "AW" branded differential. Beneath that drivetrain, a fully rebuilt, factory-spec suspension combines traditional manual steering with tight turns and increased grip. At the corners of the car, four disc brakes ensure quick, drama-free stops. Aluminized exhaust pipes shuttle spent gases through throaty mufflers and polished stainless tips. And all that fully sorted hardware rolls on handsome Rally Wheels, which spin F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around polished trim rings and turbine center caps.
INTERIOR
Between the doors, a correct Black interior offers space for two with plenty of vintage style. At ground level, clean carpet founds a sculpted console under a correct factory shifter. At the sides of that console, correct leather seats split factory lap and shoulder belts. At the front of those seats, a weather-free dash hangs restored telemetry over a correct Delco AM/FM radio. At the sides of that dash, wood-trimmed door panels front factory power windows. And in front of the driver, a satin-spoke steering wheel laps a tilting column.
