Description

A friend of mine purchased this car at a business auction in 2011 in Orange county Ca. The guy building the car was a aircraft engineer of some type. He died during the build as the car was never completed. It had all kinds of aircraft parts installed on it and every switch came out of a airplane as well as radiator and many other parts. I have attached a picture of the car when I purchased it in Sept of 2014. First thing I did was strip everything from the car so it could be stripped chemically to bare metal. I found very little rust in RRQP behind wheel in which a patch panel was put in. I shaved gas door, vents, side markers and rear trunk lock. The car was on a rotisserie and I also used my forklift to lift the vehicle for much of the work after removing from rotisserie. The engine had never been started so I took the head off and removed the pan, who ever did the engine work had to have one of the best Datsun engine building shops in southern Cal. I have attached picks of engine torn down. I can't find the head pics but it was a work of art and it is not a peanut head. The porting work on the head wasmagnificentand the intake manifold was matched to the head. the valves were as large as you can get and I measured the intake valves at 42mm and 35mm on exhaust. the cylinder bore was 3.38 inch using a micrometer. Carburetors are 40 mm Webers made in Italy. Anyway my goal was to build a one of a kind Datsun 510, one that people flock around. The paint is a single stage that I did myself and all the suspension parts are powder coated as well as the had build roll bar. I also made the door panels and had them anodized. I fabricated everything in this car personally except the inside door and window cranks. The dash was had built out of aluminum then covered with red leather. The console is machined out of a solid piece of aluminum and bolted on from underneath the car. Thegaugepackage is from Marshall in Anaheim. I wanted to use the electronic speedometer so I had to machine a GM tranny speedo gear to make it work in this Datsun tranny and it works perfect. Wilwood brakes all around as well as master cylinders. Ermish coilovers in real and Technotoy in front. 16" wheels with Dunlop Direzza's. 12 gal fuel tank. Many parts on this car are NOS when I could find them. The rear end is a R160 LS 411 gear ratio out of a late 90's Subaru. Tranny is a 5 speed. I'm guessing the engine is around 150hp and sounds awesome. I decided to go with the factory header so I polished the header completely before having it ceramic coated and I took all the anodizing off of all the AN fittings and satin finished them as I didn't want a lot of color under the hood. I spent several hours sanding the intake manifold to a satin finish also. I have a oil cooler mounted under the cowl and hard line plumbed it with stainless 1/2". The dash switches I chose are called Angel Eyes and a red circle lights up when on. I only have 6 miles on this car and still have a couple little bugs to work out before releasing it, running a little rich so I need to change jets which I will have someone who knows which ones to put in will do that for me and I want to put it on the chassis dyno in Vancouver also. The seats are 100% leather also. One of the earlier pics of the build showing the install of the rear suspension shows it with coils and shocks, I didn't like the stiffness of that application once on the ground so I went with the rear coilovers instead. I could go on but this should be a good start.
