The Mustang II was Ford’s response to the oil embargo during the 1970s. Cars were built with fuel economy rather than performance in mind. To solve Ford’s performance deficit they introduced the King Cobra package to their Mustang II.
Unlike other special Mustangs, the King Cobra was never a distinct trim level. It was simply an option package on the Mustang II. The following equipment was included in the King Cobra option: 302-cu.in. two-barrel carburetor engine, hood scoop with “5.0L” emblem, rear deck spoiler, hood “Snake” decal, black grille, black headlamp bezels and all window trim. Also included were a front air dam, pinstriping, “King Cobra” door-mounted decals, color-keyed sport mirrors, power front disc brakes, power steering, four-speed manual transmission, raised white-letter radials, Lacy spoke wheels with trim rings and Cobra center caps, spats on rear wheel wells and Rallye package consisting of heavy-duty springs, adjustable shocks and rear stabilizer bar.
Finished in a Polar White with blue stripping and King Cobra hood graphics this Mustang looks great. This King Cobra has an attractive presence aided by the King Cobra fiberglass body kit, front air dam, fender flares and rear deck spoiler. The front and rear colored-keyed bumpers fit well and they are in good condition. The flat black front grill is in good condition as is the flat black headlight bezels. All trim pieces are present and have a factory finish. The headlights and taillights are in very condition with no hazing or cracks.
Inside, this Ford features it’s original white vinyl front and rear bucket seats that look good, it should be noted that there is a tear in the driver’s seat. The white door panels, blue carpet and black dashboard are a continuation of the exterior and look good. The white headliner completes rest of the interior and is in very good condition. The weather-stripping is in good condition, with little or no signs of drying, tearing or shrinkage. All the gauges are in their correct original locations, however the oil pressure gauge is inoperable. The original Mustang II designed three spoke steering wheel and AM/FM radio are in good condition.
This ’78 King Cobra is equipped with a 302 cid Ford V8 engine fed by a Ford 2 barrel carburetor, Cobra air cleaner, polished valve covers. Power is transferred to the wheels by a Hurst shifter connected to a Borg Warner RAD four speed manual transmission. Performance headers and side exhaust give this Ford the muscle car sound. Drivers assist features include rack and pinion power steering, power front disc brakes. The 13-inch King Cobra Lacy aluminum alloy wheels with Cobra center caps feature raised white lettered Cooper radial tires that complete the look of the seventies muscle car.
Authentic Mustang II King Cobras have steadily been increasing in value over the past few years. Since the original price was considerably high, only 4,306 were ever produced, and a select few are in similar condition as this 1978 Ford King Cobra. GET OUT AND DRIVE!
