Description

Offered for sale is an absolutely beautiful. entirely honest and mechanically excellent 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL finished in rare. attractive and factory correct two-tone Horizon Blue (DB 304) with a Dark Blue (DB 904) hardtop and hubcaps over a blue interior. a sophisticated livery that is all at once timeless and era specific. Purchased from the estate of the original owner. this beautiful example has a completely solid undercarriage and is in turnkey mechanical condition. Per the estate’s description of the car. it was always a cherished weekend driver for the original owner. used as a fair weather daily driver for the first decade of its life. followed by nearly 35 years of sparing weekend use. Based on the estate’s description of the car and our own mechanic’s opinion. the 53k miles showing on the odometer are believed to be original to the car and it was always properly stored. garaged and cared-for. resulting in the clean. honest and sound. largely original example offered today. The car’s Horizon Blue and Dark Blue finish is absolutely beautiful – deep. lustrous and marred only by the most negligible of imperfections. none of which are significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. The body is also excellent – straight. free of rust and retaining correct and consistent panel fits and gaps throughout. The chrome is in excellent original condition. free of any dings or pitting. and the original wheels are wrapped in nearly new Michelin tires with plenty of remaining tread. The car’s blue interior is equally as clean. the MB Tex seats and interior panels free of any significant wear or damage and showing only limited patina. The carpets present nicely. showing only wear to limited areas. the wood trim is in great shape and the car retains its original Becker radio. original steering wheel and dealer installed Frigiking air conditioning unit. The hardtop’s headliner is perfect and the dark blue German canvas soft top is in great shape. showing only minimal wear and retaining a crystal clear rear window. The car is also in excellent mechanical condition. the original engine starting easily without any smoke. idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the transmission’s gears with strong and even compression across all cylinders. Following the original owner’s death. the estate spent more than $8. 00 in repairs and routine service at an independent specialty shop to bring the car back to turn-key condition. The ride quality is excellent. the suspension is tight and the brakes are strong and true. The car is an absolute pleasure to drive. whether tooling through town. winding through the canyons or bombing down the highway. One of the Mercedes W113’s most appreciated aspects is that they are truly mechanically modern enough for everyday use on today’s roads. and while this car certainly lives up to that standard. it clearly has always been a well looked after weekend driver. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an appreciating late production 280SL Pagoda with all the right things going for it: beautiful cosmetics. rare and desirable two tone color combination. solid undercarriage and a strong original engine and mechanicals. Whether for the seasoned collector or the weekend enthusiast. this car deserves the serious consideration of anyone in the W113 market.
