1965 Mercedes-Benz 230SL
Factory Pagoda Top True Texas Car Same Owner for Last 34 Years 3L Inline 6-Cylinder 4-Speed Manual TransmissionMotoeXotica is pleased to announce our latest offering a classic 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230SL. Residing with the same owner in Texas for the past 34 years this particular 230SL is in extremely good condition; very few faults can be found. This series was built using the German principle of Sport Leicht or in English a lightweight sports car. This W113 series Mercedes-Benz is the second generation of the legendary SL series. Along with many visual design changes vast mechanical improvements were also implemented in this generation. Such as multi-port fuel injection aluminum body panels double wishbone front suspension front disc brakes and an entirely new hardtop. The drivers and passengers doors and compartment were stiffened to better protect the occupants in case of an impact. Despite the fact that the 230SL was intended as a luxury roadster Mercedes’ engineers built an extremely quick car that out classed many performance oriented sports cars of the day. To demonstrate this Rudolf Uhlenhaut set a lap time at Annemasse Vetraz-Monthoux racetrack of .2 seconds slower than then a V12 Ferrari 250 GT racecar.
Painted in a lovely silver metallic paint with red leather interior this is pure German class. The paint is in great condition but does show a few minor imperfections. Making this car even more desirable is the “Pagoda” hardtop in black. Designed by Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi the “Pagoda” hardtop name was derived from the unique concave roof of a Japanese pagoda. A black soft-top is available when the “Pagoda” hardtop has been removed both of which are in fantastic condition. There is a small cut in the passenger side soft top but is still fully serviceable. The exterior chrome is in excellent condition; only very minor signs of ageing are found around the taillight assembly and small imperfections on the driver side door trim. Both front and rear bumpers have been replaced recently and therefore are in ideal condition.
The deep red leather seats have recently been reupholstered with the correct Mercedes leather and show extremely well. Along with the seats the carpeting was replaced with the correct German weave grey carpet. Both colored matched door panels are in very good condition as well as the chrome trim pieces that adorn them. Original VDO gauges are in fantastic condition placed in the beautiful aluminum machined dashboard with red leather accents. Finally the wonderful original thin wood steering wheel is in great condition and is a true pleasure to use.
Mechanically this Mercedes-Benz is powered by a 2.3L straight 6-cyclinder making 150hp and 145 lb-ft. New to this engine was Bosch’s mechanical multi-port fuel injection system which was very advanced for its time. A 4-speed manual transmission delivers power to the rear differential in an extremely smooth and liner manner. Power front disc brakes and boosted power rear drum brakes allow this Mercedes to come to an elegant stop. Finally newer 195/70R14 tires have been placed on the original paint matched steel wheel with the correct wheel covers in place.
What are you waiting for? This is classic German roadster is an elegant journey waiting for the owner to give it direction. These “Pagoda” top SL’s values are on a constant upward climb with no end in site making them excellent investment pieces. As 300SL’s are commanding over 1 million dollar price tags and the 190SL’s in the strong six figures its a faily safe bet that these handsome cars are next on the fast appreciation block. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!! Odometer currently reads 88325 which is believed to be original however due to age of vehicle it is sold as is and mileage exempt.
