The 1980 Mercedes 450SL featured here, IN *10704412062577*, s such a rare gem. Built in March of 1980, t is one of the last 450SLs made and has been driven a mere 62,198 miles in 35 years. The car was purchased by a wealthy couple residing in Granada Hills, alif., longside another brand new Benz, 1981 380SEL sedan. They cherished both Mercedes-Benzes until they stopped driving due to moving into assisted living, few months ago. Featuring beautiful paint and a breathtaking interior, he SL is nothing short of spectacular.

Inside the sparkling clean engine compartment, riginality abounds.
The four-and-a-half-liter cast iron Vee Eight might be of German descent, ut it behaves much like a good ol' American muscle car engine, ertainly aided by its advanced single overhead camshaft design. The 450 is a torque monster, oafing happily along at any speed, rom its 550rpm idle up to its 6,000rpm redline. Yes, his Roadster is capable of running on the Autobahn at 125mph, ll day long. Assembled with utmost precision and fed by a BOSCH L-Jetronic fuel injection, his power plant thankfully lacks the black boxes and myriad sensors of its successors. The 450SL is a purebred athlete from the days of the dinosaurs, estined to outlive all of the high-tech toys of the new Millennium.

As one would expect, here are no signs of corrosion or previous damage on this low-mileage SL. All factory finishes appear to be intact and as delivered.

Not only does the SL combine the best elements of a luxurious tourer and an exhilarating sports car, ut its versatility is unrivalled, ince all R107 models came factory-equipped with 2 tops. The steel hardtop, ith its heated rear window, ermits year-round driving, ven in inclement weather conditions. It can be removed within minutes, ransforming the car into a true Roadster. Of course, folding convertible top is waiting to be raised in the event of a surprise rain shower.

SL's coachwork remained virtually unchanged during its long production run. The early cars were prone to rust issues; this fine, outhern California resident shows no corrosion, nywhere. The Anthracite Metallic paint, actory code DB172, s a desirable factory color. The finish has remained in wonderful condition, ith just minimal signs of use, et nothing that would cause even a fussy collector sleepless nights.

The chromed "Bundt" alloys are original to the car and look marvelous. Fisk Classic Steel Radials in the correct size of 205/70-14 all around have plenty of tread left.

Inside, he world's ultimate tanning machine exudes a luxurious Old World ambiance.
Genunine zebra wood veneer and Italian ROSER leather set dominant interior accents, orthy of a Rolls Royce or Bentley! Velour carpeting and floor mats are extra clean.

You simply can't improve upon perfection! The vulnerable dash top, ften cracked due to exposure to the sun, ere it is as perfect as it gets. Luxury equipment includes power windows, acuum-operated power locking system, utomatic climate control, nd cruise control. Everything works as it should.

Neither the black steering wheel nor the finely detailed instruments display any signs of aging or wear.

We've had quite a few Mercedes star cruisers throughout the years, ut we have had never one with such perfect leather seats! The Italian hides still emit an aroma so intoxicating that you'll never want to get out of the car again, omething you'd usually experience when entering the realm of a Rolls Royce or a 1950s vintage Mercedes when the Germans still used vat-dyed leather. There's not a single imperfection to be found here, o scuffing, o scratch, o rip, ear, tain: these seas are simply perfect, ike brand new in every way, onsistent with a low mileage car.

SL's trunk is fully lined with fine velour carpeting. Everything is super clean here as well, lose to concours condition! Factory tool kit is complete and usually rests in a separate compartment to the right, hich also contains the battery.

Factory spare -- still with green dot on the tire -- is stored below the trunk floor. For extended storage during the winter months, here's a main power switch with removable key.

Halloween 2015 turned out to be another lovely autumn day in our olde mission town San Buenaventura, nd we were excited about exercising the 450SL.

The car starts, uns, rives, hifts, andles, nd brakes very nicely, hank you very much, ith no untoward noises emanating from its drivetrain. This SL exudes an air of utter confidence!

Returning home, e are very impressed, ndeed. The inherent qualities of a Mercedes Benz Roadster are based on a long tradition of hand-built automobiles. You are looking at a car that has barely aged in close to 36 years. Factory fit and finish of every part is just about perfect.

R107 SLs are wonderful automobiles. They are as safe as a bank vault and provide trouble-free motoring. The 450SLs have now rightfully taken the place of their coveted predecessors, he out-of-sight Pagoda 230/250/280 SLs, n terms of affordable collectibility.
