Description
1977 documented Pontiac Can Am. one of 1. 77 ever made. Its estimated that less than 400 remain. There are around 375 in the registry. and 20% of those are not deemed roadworthy by their owners. This car was once owned by the keeper of the registry. These cars are hard to find. This car has the Firethorn red interior with bucket seats and console. Of course it has all of the standard Can Am features including the W72 Pontiac high performance Trans Am 400 ("T/A 6. 6") engine. nbsp;TH400 automatic. Grand Prix dash with rally gauges. clock. power front disc brakes. variable ratio power steering. rally RTS handling package. front and rear stabilizer bars. rally II wheels. rubber bumper strips. louvered quarter windows. sport mirrors. blacked-out grill & chrome. tri-tone stripes. rear spoiler. and the Trans Am hood shaker. In addition. this car was ordered with several additional options. including posi. tilt wheel. tach. custom sport steering wheel. dual horns. tinted windows. pulse wipers. AM-FM stereo 8-Track. Through the years. other owners added the remote trunk release. nbsp;cruise. dome reading lamps. air shocks. the visor vanity mirror and some other optional lights. This car is an unusual Can Am as it doesn't have A/C. so it has the 3. 23 rear. A/C cars got the 3. 08 rear standard. California or high altitude cars got the production Oldsmobile 403 engine and 2. 73 gears standard. so this drivetrain combination makes for the best runner among the Can Am's. This car has run several 15. 0's at 92 mph in the quarter mile. THE GOOD:This car is in the Can Am registry. I have the build sheet and a copy of the window sticker to prove its a legit Can Am. Comes with lotsa documentation and information. Original & correct carb rebuilt with original parts. Has the original W72 engine with chrome valve covers still in place. and correct 6X 4 heads. I have removed the factory shaker block off plate and converted it to work with a functional flapper ( http://pontiactransamshakers. homestead. com/ ). The original parts will go with it. so it can be put it back to stock if you like. The floors and trunk are solid. The floors look like they are still the originals without any patching. THE BAD:I've never played an 8 track tape in the stereo. The only one I have doesn't play but I'm not sure if it's the radio or the tape. A previous owner added air shocks. but the left one is leaking so they won't raise the rear above stock height. The console clock doesn't work. I bought a replacement on eBay. but that one doesn't work either. I'll include it with the car. maybe you can make one good working clock out of the two. Some of the body mounts may need replacing. These are being reproduced and cost about $250 for the entire kit of 28 pieces. Some obvious amateur body work was done previously on the inside door bottoms. which doesn't show from the outside when they are closed. Some minor dings. scratches. imperfections. rust marks here and there. but not bad for almost 40 years. This car was restored once before years ago and may need it again in a few years. For now though. it looks good and there is no bubbling or rust holes anywhere. I do put it in a few summer car shows. A previous owner installed an aftermarket Edelbrock intake manifold. probably for a little better performance. I don't have the original. The lower profile intake makes the shaker sit down a tad lower than stock. and some of the original emission system vacuum hoses are gone because there are no provisions for them with this manifold. I added a couple of NOS chrome turn signal bezels from a Grand Am on the front just because I like them better. If that's not your thing they come back off with 2 screws. The odometer says it has 77. 98 miles. There may be a few more by auction end. This car starts fine. runs fine. doesn't smoke or make any unusual noises. It may leave a few drips on the garage floor occasionally. You will too when you're 38 years old. Oil changes were performed with Royal Purple brand synthetic oil. The car is always garaged and not driven from Halloween through March. When I bought the car it had a well used Evolution car cover. which I still use to cover it in the winter. The cover will go with the car. The car was modified with a true dual exhaust. Some previous owner removed the CAT. The right side is missing one of the 2 exhaust manifold studs so it does have a little exhaust noise around the pipe flange that you can sometimes hear when its idling. It was like that when I bought it. and I just never got around to fixing it. This car is driven but it is a solid #3 maybe #2 car. Please ask your questions before bidding. I don't want to be responsible for your assumptions. Funds must clear before it goes anywhere. On Apr-28-15 at 16:14:12 PDT. seller added the following information: I was contacted by the #3 (1997-2003) owner this Can Am and he is willing to answer any questions you may have regarding the car during the period he owned it. He installed over $5. 00 in NOS GM parts. and performed a lot of work to the car during his ownership.
