Starting with the body. Mr. Conway chopped off the coupe’s roof. eshaped the nose with a splitter and period chin spoiler. andlengthened the wheel wells to resemble those of a Speedster. Arollbar and full cage were added to reinforce the structuralintegrity and ensure safety driver during racing. Mr. Conway thenintegrated some classic Porsche components. such as a Speedsterwindshield. headlights and bezels and a 356 rear lid engine vent. Proper 356 brakes and suspension components were installed. as was anengine from a 1968 Porsche 912. The 1. 82 cc 912 motor was chosenbecause it is the ultimate evolution of Porsche’s classic4-cylinder case and is therefore not only more reliable and ideallysized for the Karmann Ghia’s rear engine compartment. but also adirect descendant of the 4-cylinder units used in the 356. Mr. Conwayalso undertook some performance-enhancing modifications of theengine. upgrading the unit with a reinforced flywheel. boring it outfor a greater displacement of 1. 20 cc. and fitting it with forgedpistons and barrels as well as a 356C crankshaft. A K & N airfilter was added to feed the Solex carburetors. and all componentswere properly weight balanced for ideal operation. Mr. Conwayfurthermore tweaked the Ghia’s transmission. creating a close-ratiogearbox that delivers surprising torque and devilishly quick 0-60 mphsprints. Cosmetic considerations included fitting the interior withproper 356 instruments. a late 356 shifter. and racing seats. Intotal. Mr. Conway’s exacting work took four years and over $60. 00of investment. Thus. despite its significant investment andownership by top names in the collector car niche. this car stillfeatures only 5007 miles on its odometer. Displaying a warmpatina to its exceptionally detailed red paint. this powerful KarmannGhia Speedster Special features a removable hood with pins. Minilitewheels. and Raydyot side mirrors. Its Solex carburetors have recentlybeen rebuilt. ensuring flawless mechanical performance andbreathtaking acceleration. Its blistering and definitive Porscheperformance is matched only by its seamless aesthetic blend of two ofGermany’s most beloved sports cars. Osnabruck’s beautiful KarmannGhia. and Stuttgart’s cherished 356 Speedster. Warranty InformationThis vehicle is being sold as is. where is with no warranty. expressed written or implied.
