Description

1970 Porsche 914-6
1970 914-6 VIN *9140431051* Matching Original Engine (Serial # 6404602)
The original engine is in boxes.
A little history for the Porsche 914-6 vehicles:Porsche CEO Ferdinand Piech proposed a joint venture where a sports car could be built and offered with the choice of a flat-four or flat-six engines. VW would market and sell the 4-cylinder cars while the 6-cylinder cars would be sold as an entry level Porsche. Porsche lacked the money to develop the car, so a handshake agreement was made that would have VW covering the development costs. However, as the 914 project was well underway the chairman of VW died and the new chairman had no interest in honoring an old handshake agreement, if it was costing his company money. VW pulled the financial plug on the 914 and Porsche was stuck with the bill to develop and build the new sports car causing the price to rise dangerously close to that of the 911. Although it was fraught with development woes the 914 did prove to be a brilliant little car. Light quick fuel efficient and even practical thanks to two trunks and a removable roof panel the mid-engine 914 was a joy to drive and offered near perfect handling. The chassis could easily handle more power so, Porsche installed a 2-liter version of their flat six in to create the 914-6. The 914-6 quickly found success in rallying and circuit racing and could have done more had it not come perilously close to outperforming the 911. In spite of high prices and the stigma of being considered are-brandedVW when new the 914 sold well between 1969 and 1976.
This 1970914-6 is a great example that is presented in beautiful factory correct silver body, anddesirableblackvinylinterior. There have been several 914-6's on eBay outfitted with the factory 14" Fuchs wheels. This option was not thepreferredoption in 1970's. These were only offered tothosethat needed a smoother ride via taller tire profile. This actually did not add to the handling experience like the performance & tire options that the 15" wheels provided. The options were the infamousPorscheFuchs or Mahle "Gas Burners" as called by many Porscheenthusiasts.,The silver paint is very good overall condition. I was going to have thevehiclecolor sanded &resprayed as there are some blemishes on the deck lids. However, decided that this should be the task of the new buyer. The paint is in very good condition to excellent, however it is not perfect, bust sill very presentable. The body has excellent factory gaps and body panels were expertly aligned. The chrome bumpers are in very good condition too.The weather stripping is still in excellent condition, considering that this vehicle was restored more than 15+yearsago. Correct black vinyl covers the pillars and roof which is correctly trimmed with silver anodized alloy moldings. This 914-6 structure is solid and virtually rust freeincluding the troublesome “hell hole” under the battery is in good order.. The pattered vinyl seats are in great condition having been fully restored and seeing little use since restoration back in 1998. Fresh Perlon carpet has been expertly fitted and the dash is in beautiful condition free of cracks or sun damage. The current steering wheel is a 13.5" Momo (343 mm). The shift knob is theoriginal, commonly lost and highly desirable to restorers. The magic of the 914-6 lies behind the seats in the form of a 2.0-liter air-cooled flat-six that produces about 110 horsepower at 5800 rpm giving the featherweight 914 a proper handling & acceleration. This particular 914-6 is currently outfitted with a Andial built 2.4 LTR., 911S MFI engine, and has 11:5:1compression ratio.
THIS ENGINE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THESALE OF THIS 914-6, LIKEWISE THE POLISHED FUCHS THAT ARE CURRENTLY MOUNTED ON THE CAR-THESE ARE MOUNTED WITH Street / Track Tires, and are over 15 yrs. old) I have another set of period correct (Date coded 1970) 15x6 FUCHS that will go with the car & will a new set of 185 x 15 tires too!
The original numbers-matching engine HAS BEEN IN STORAGE. The engine bay is well detailed and very clean. Power is fed through a 5-speed manual gearbox which delivers crisp positive shifting This is a very well sorted mechanically excellent 914-6 that also has the benefit of excellent overall cosmetics.
The Sale includes a factory owner’s manual I may have the service booklet (need to verify) both keys (red and black) and will forward the official Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche when it arrives. I have already contacted Porsche NA, and they confirmed that theauthenticityof this 914-6 (confirmation email from them which confirms the matching numbers and desirable specification.
As values skyrocket on all collectible Porsche's,this 914-6 has tremendous upside potential for the collector. It will become difficult to repeat a great opportunity on such a rare, and collectible 914-6.
