You're looking at one of the most mechanically sound 60's VW's out there. Better yet, it's a 66, and best of all the last owner was conscious enough to keep the original 1300 and painstakingly rebuild and balance every single element of the drive train on this car to original spec. Matching numbers throughout. The car can without hesitation, stair down the barrel of the best of road trips out there with reliability rarely found on a 60's aircooled car. See the pictures of some of this work done. Rust repair was minimal, documented, and done correctly. Starts excellent every time, motor barely moves in the boot, revs up perfectly, shifts exactly as it should, and stops better than my late model jeep. Keep in mind this is a '66 which is a big deal to most of those aircooled folks out there. John Muir himself says the 1300 engine is the best thing Volkswagen ever put in their cars, and the design of the early bodies is unmistakably more attractive then the big square bumpers and massive american mandated taillights, or plastic dash. Take a look at them side by said and this one screams classic all that much louder. That said I love em all to be honest and Ghias get that little extra "wow don't see those ever!" factor, but a 66 is another level above. So why in the world is this car not listed for $25K? The guy was an excellent mechanic and super ocd about the details, he was not a paint guy. Don't get me wrong it never gets put down but to match the level of the rest of the car it needs some cosmetic love to be perfect. Is it driver quality? Absolutely, and looks great for that. Depends on what you want to do. Personally I like to drive my cars and this level of paintwork is fine with me, however given the extent of the mechanics rebuild and the year you might want to give her what she deserves (as long as that doesn't keep you from driving it!) That IS the only issue. No rust, no tuning, no brakes, no nothing NEEDED, but could use paint to be a 10. I'm probably making a bigger deal then I have to but I also own a fully restored Porsche, and newly painted modern cars to compare it to. Again, matter of what you're looking for. The two tone looks so cool I'll add, gives it a slightly mischievous look in my opinion, so classic too. Ok I'm rambling on. Prepare yourself for gas station chatterboxes, ritual Friday night cruise ins, air-cooled people that will crawl out of the woodwork to introduce themselves and compliment the car, the year, and the fact that its still mostly original, and a bunch of "what is that?"'s. Enjoy it, its a classic car, and it can be a lifestyle and a good one! Life is way to short to drive boring cars ;) good luck!
