Description
Up for sale is my 1958 Plymouth Silver Special. In case you didn't know the glory that is a Silver Special. and what makes it so "Special" here's the breakdown:The Silver Special was a model brought out for the spring of '58 to boost sales. Brand new they cost $1958. Standard options were: White sidewall tires. full wheel covers. special anodized aluminum side trim/inserts in same waffle pattern as Belvedere sportone. Forward Look emblems on the quarters and metallic silver painted roof. Under the hood is a 230 cubic inch flathead six. The engine was replaced shortly before the car was parked. I was told from the original owner that he took the car to a shop to get the engine worked on. somehow they broke something and they had to buy him a replacement engine. I found a tag on the engine block that seems to confirm this story. It shows the engine is a remanufactured unit bored . 40 over. Has a leak at the exhaust manifold. The car has a 3 speed manual transmission. It operates as it should. All gears work well with no issues. These cars have an unsynchronized first gear. There are practically no options on this car other than a heater. The heater works GREAT I might add! Keeps you warm in the winter! This car is a radio delete. backup light delete. etc. A Plain Jane for sure! The car runs and drives and can be driven as is. that is what I've been doing! I sourced all the correct parts as some were missing. Correct carburetor found. rebuilt and installed. Replaced all the missing throttle linkage pieces. Choke heat tube added. Generator was rebuilt. New voltage regulator. Water pump replaced and crank pulley/balancer replaced. New belt. New battery and cables. Air Filter. ew temperature sending unit. Oil and Oil filter changed. This car was last driven in 1991 until I got her going again! Been driving her as a daily driver for quite some time now. The interior was redone in velour in the 80s. It isn't in the best shape. I have a mexican blanket covering the front seat. Door panels have water damage but luckily the vinyl is in good shape. All you need is to make new card panels and glue the original vinyl to the new boards. I've done it before and it turns out pretty good. I ripped out the nasty headliner and painted the whole inside of the roof with POR15. All headliner bows are present. Package tray is made of awesome interior wood paneling with bad ass vintage 1980s 6x9s out back. They do work. and they go with the car! That has to sweeten the deal! The body needs some work. Floors are in great shape. there's still gray paint on the bottom side. Trunk floor replaced with a repop pan and passenger trunk extension replaced and undercoated. Not the prettiest but gets the job done! Pencil eraser sized hole on passenger front fender top. Small dent on trunk lid and Plymouth letters are missing. Paint is faded and worn in spots. I guess you could call it "patina" if you wanted to. The car was originally white with a silver top. It was repainted a dark metallic blue at some point that has now faded to a silver color. It fits the Silver theme! I bought a decent gas tank and sealed it with POR15 gas tank sealer. Installed the tank with a good sending unit I bought. A new sock was added to the sending unit. Doglegs and quarters have rust. Trunk weatherstrip channel as some rust. The brake system has been completely rebuilt. New master cylinder. wheel cylinders. rubber lines. all metal lines front to back. new brake light switch. new shoes. new hardware. and drums turned. New front wheel bearings and seals. new rear wheel bearing seals. Original rims were blasted and painted the correct gray with silver front. (So you don't lose points at the show right??) Car has good. older whitewall radial tires on it. plenty of tread left. Bought and installed a decent set of '58 Plymouth hubcaps. I purchased and replaced the missing Silver Special side trim. So now she wears all her correct trim. The best part are the Forward Look emblems on the fins! All the gauges and lights work. Horn works. The hand brake works. Wipers work and have new blades. The ignition key matches the doors and the locks operate as they should. No trunk key. Clear North Carolina title in my name.
