1964 Porsche 356C Coupe
s/n 219033, Engine No. 714398
Light Ivory with Black Leatherette
Few cars are immediately identifiable simply by their silhouette. The legendary 356 is one of those rare cars. With its unique profile and race-inspired lineage, the 356 became the first Porsche to proudly bear the family name of Ferdinand Porsche. Introduced in 1948, the 356 benefited from continual refinements until 1965, when production yielded to the 911. During this time, engine horsepower increased from a noble 40hp to just under 100hp. The 356 “C” series cars became the most evolved over the historic sixteen-year model run, adding multiple improvements, including the use of disc brakes.
This nicely finished example has been documented with Porsche Certificate of Authenticity stating it was produced in June 1964, finished in color code 6404 “Light Ivory”, and trimmed in black leatherette. Delivered with vented chrome wheels and Phoenix tires, it also featured two pairs of seatbelts, two loud speakers, and a Blaupunkt “Frankfurt de Luxe” radio (nr. 514565), still in the car today. The matching numbers engine has been fully rebuilt by local Porsche specialist Sam Simpkins. The rebuild is fully documented with several receipts and the car has been road tested accumulating fewer than 600 miles since the rebuild. The car has recently been professionally painted in the correct factory color.
Originally sold new in California, this black plate car retains the original floors and, as such, exhibits excellent structural rigidity. Current mileage is 122,941 and is believed to be correct considering the integrity of the vehicle overall. All mechanical features have been tended to with a high level of detail. The rebuilt engine has been updated with Weber carburetors to enhance performance; a desirable upgrade for enthusiasts who enjoy spirited driving on open roads. The original Zenith carburetors and air cleaners have been retained and accompany the car.
The interior remains largely original with the front seats having been recently recovered using high quality materials in the original pattern. The original headliner, rear seats, and door panels present very nicely. Overall the new paint has been done to a high driver quality level, displaying an overall glossy, uniformed finish. The doors shut tightly and fit well. However the front storage cover shows slightly irregular gapping. The engine compartment is nicely finished with original components and updated fasteners appropriate for the driver nature of this car. Undercarriage is solid though not finished to a show quality level.
Driving this car, one is reminded of the excellent steering and cornering capabilities these cars are known for. With the Weber carbs, the rebuilt engine comes on strong and exhibits all the wonderful sounds Porsche enthusiasts have come to revere. Suspension is firm but pliant in cornering and road manners on the highway are smooth and solid as one might expect from a California car retaining its sound, original floor.
Included with the sale are the original owner’s manual, the matching spare slotted chrome wheel, an extra key, the original Zenith carburetors, and original air filter housings. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, records of service over the past twelve years, and all records covering the comprehensive engine rebuild are included as well. This handsome car exhibits all the best traits of a 356 series Porsche one might expect – a delightful driving experience in a well-finished car.
