Description

This car is a real time capsule. it is almost 100% 1979 original. Very un-molested. all the systems work. Clock. ODO. speedo. heater. defrost. fresh air vents. doors. even the trunk lift! Hard to find a rabbit this complete these days. This car has some very desirable features… · 1. 5L Diesel Engine · Working Sunroof · Original 5 speed car · Rare Color – Inaris Silver. I was told even more rare in diesel cars. · Rare interior color – I would call it OD green. it is the coolest looking interior I have seen in a rabbit. · 79 is the last year of the cool retro dash and small tail lights. It is a very nice driver but low on power. I daily drove this car as is for several months up until I got my other rabbit so it’s not too bad. Mileage is still around 50mpg. After doing some research and seeing that there is blow-by coming from the dip-stick hole I would assume low compression and the engine will need a re-ring in the near future. Doesn’t look too hard. I was going to do it myself but I switched projects. If you can read a manual. follow instructions. and have basic tools I think it can be done in a home garage. All the wiring is mostly original and un-hacked. no strange electrical gremlins. The only modification that I know of is it had a push button glow system when I got it. not sure why but it works great. It really likes about a 15 second glow to start but will still start with less if it’s warm. The only thing I added is a heavy duty ford glow plug relay to the system. I painted the car myself last summer. I only sprayed the outside. all the jambs are the original paint. Overall it looks good but there are a few in-perfections in the paint. not any runs but some “tiger striping” in the metallic flakes and maybe a few dust specs from the garage. All the doors open and close good. all the windows roll up and down. I swapped in cabriolet vent windows to get rid of the glued on levers. 20% tint in the back and 35% in the front. It has some very minor rust. I do not believe there are any holes into the passenger compartment but there is a hole on each side on the front behind the front tires from the outer to inner fender. There is some scaly surface rust in the trunk that hasn’t got any worse since I removed the trunk mat. No holes in the trunk. all that needs to be done here is to coat it with a good sealer like POR-15 or Zero-Rust. I know folks are going to ask “can I drive it home?” I have never taken it on a long trip but I think as long as you kept it around 60 and didn’t need to go over any mountains I think the car would drive just about anywhere but do so at your own risk. If you live far away bring a trailer or have it shipped All this car really needs is someone to go through the engine and maybe lower it and it will be one of the best rabbits out there.
